Welcome to the homepage of the Molecular Plant Research/ Biochemistry group at the University of Wuppertal

ResearchOur research group focusses on different fields of research, e.g. phloem loading in plants, analyses of nectar and crops.
CoursesFor biological studies our group represents the field of botany. Furthermore we are involved in the teaching of food chemistry students.
Education  The students work on different school relevant topics as one part of their Bachelor and Master theses.

In her research projects Prof. Lohaus depends on the collaboration of aphids. While it is easy to take a blood sample from veins from humans it is more difficult with plants. Therefore aphids are used: they sting into the part of the leaf veins which transports sugar and other nutrients. The stylets are cutted with a laser beam and the oozing sap is collected from the part of the stylet which remains in the leaf. Thereby only a small quantity of sap can be extracted but with a corresponding analytical method the components can be determined. This way different research questions can be answered: Which components are transported in the plant? Which transport mechanisms do exist? How does the transport in plants change under modified environmental conditions? Which transport mechanisms developed during the evolutionary process? Press office University Wuppertal 2009
